AGAINST THE TIDE BY G. D. WRIGHT – BOOK REVIEW

PUBLISHED BY AVON ON THE 18th JUNE 2026

G.D. Wright has signed a two-book deal with Avon UK (part of the Harper Collins family), and his debut was released in August 2024. It’s called AFTER THE STORM, which is a police procedural with a twisty, emotional hook. My second novel, INTO THE FIRE, was released in June 2025. AGAINST THE TIDE is coming in June 2026, with the fourth in 2027.

Gary Wright joined Kent Police at the age of 18 and worked in a variety of uniformed roles. At the age of 29, and completely out of the blue, he suffered two cardiac arrests that led to the diagnosis of a life-limiting and incurable disease of the heart. Following the implantation of an internal defibrillator into his heart, he was unable to continue policing and retired at the age of 30. He bought a coffee shop in Ramsgate Harbour, and spent years looking out over the sea and dreaming up stories. He now writes full-time, committing those very stories to paper.

Netgalley and Avon kindly sent me this book to read and review. I am so pleased they did, as this is amazing. I am writing this on the 15th March, and I read this book yesterday. I could not put it down. It will be my book of the month for March, most definitely. The pace and story are so good, with twists all the way through and then some towards the end. This author’s first two books were great, but this surpasses them by miles.

It is set near where I live on the south east coast, which is where this author lives. Police procedurals are always so good when written by ex police, and they certainly get my vote. The way this story plays out is bloody amazing; you cannot predict the ending or any of what happens. Sheer perfect writing, I cannot wait for the next book coming next year, 2027.
