THE WIPEOUT ROUND BY JO BAVINGTON-JONES – BOOK REVIEW

PUBLISHED BY HUT22 ON THE 7th APRIL 2025

Jo Bavington-Jones lives on the Kent coast with her partner, the photographer Dirk Seyfried, and the neighbours’ cats. And sometimes a very friendly fox called Samantha.

Jo came to writing late in life after many years of working to pay the bills and bringing up her son. After learning her craft writing women’s fiction, Jo finally turned to a life of crime during the first Covid lockdown, and The Write Way to Die series was born. Jo says crime fiction is definitely her first love, and is about to start writing book four, but she is still drawn to women’s fiction and family dramas, and says not to rule out the possibility of a love story in the future.

The Wipeout Round is set in Folkestone, like the previous two books in this series. I must say that I love these stories, not just because they are set in Folkestone, where I live, or because Jo is a friend of mine. These stories are bloody brilliant, I wish I could write as good as Jo. I read this last one, called The Wipeout Round, last week while I sat in the garden enjoying the sunshine. I had to force myself not to finish reading it the first night, as they get under your skin, and I get impatient about what is going to happen next. I love the way these murders and mysteries just seem to fall into the hands of Amy and Jenny for them to solve. Nothing is forced, so the story flows so well, I also love the humour that pops in every so often.

I am not sure which book I like the most, as all three are extremely good in different ways. Jo is also writing the 4th book at the moment in this series, I cannot wait to see where the next murders take us. I also love the covers of these books as they are so simple but very good. If you buy the books from Jo, you get them in an evidence bag, which is a brilliant marketing/publicity idea, as is the bullet that is really a pen!

You can always find Jo at The Hut 22 on the Harbour Arm every weekend, where she stocks all her books and will sign them if required. If you haven’t read them yet, get them on your summer list as they are great holiday reading.
