THE MANTUARY BY JULIE WASSMER – BOOK REVIEW

Published by The Conrad Press on the 13th of November 2024

Julie Wassmer is a UK TV drama writer who wrote the BBC series EastEnders for almost twenty years before becoming the author of the popular Whitstable Pearl Mystery crime novels—now a major new TV series starring Kerry Godliman, Howard Charles, and Frances Barber.

Her debut novel,  The Whitstable Pearl Mystery, followed in 2015, published by the award-winning Little, Brown Book Group. Nine books in the Whitstable Pearl Mystery series have since followed, including Murder at the Allotment, published in May 2024. The third season of the TV series Whitstable Pearl was also filmed that year. is an executive producer of the series made by Buccaneer – the production company behind Marcella – for the streaming service Acorn TV.

Julie lives on the coast in Whitstable where she shares a home with her husband, Kas, and cats, Maisie and Lily. She also spends much time campaigning on local and environmental issues.

Having read all of Julie’s books I was excited to read this thriller, which did not disappoint. I could not put it down once I started and sat the whole day reading it! I thought I knew how it was going but then I changed my mind, the way Julie writes draws you into the story so well, that you can almost feel it happening. Maggie’s suspicions in the story about her son-in-law seem so wrong to her husband and daughter so they are nearly put to one side. The mother’s love for a child comes through as she knows her daughter and something is not right but with nothing to go on she concentrates on work and the dramas unfolding there.

I love that this story keeps you thinking about what is going on, then an explosive ending!

Well done Julie, another bestseller that would make a great film.
